During 1999, 42 officers were murdered and 65 were killed accidentally in the performance of their duties. In addition, 8,174 law enforcement agencies reported 55,026 line-of-duty assaults. This report presented data concerning the incidents and information used by many law enforcement training personnel in efforts to develop strategies that shield law enforcement professionals and the citizens they protect. The report contains statistics on felonious or accidental deaths of duly sworn local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who were: working in an official capacity, had full arrest powers, wore a badge (ordinarily), carried a firearm (ordinarily), and were paid from government funds set aside specifically for payment of sworn police law enforcement representatives. Statistics included types of weapons used, circumstances at scene of incident, profiles of victim officers, profiles of known assailants, population group of victim officers, department and agency of victim officers, and several permutations and combinations of data.
