This resource manual contains materials for the Tenth Annual Conference on Crimes Against Children, 1998, which focused on instruction in and discussion of police procedures and techniques in the investigation of various crimes against children.
Abstract
Among the types of crimes discussed were missing children, child sexual abuse, child physical abuse, Internet crimes against children, child neglect, child pornography, and nonfamily abductions. Among the topics discussed that pertained to child abuse investigations were proactive sexual abuse investigations, a proactive approach to sex offenders, recent legal developments in the investigation and litigation of child abuse, interactive training in fatal child abuse and neglect investigations, medical evaluations of child physical abuse cases, psychological evidence of sexual abuse, and reconstruction techniques for child physical and neglect injuries. Other child abuse topics covered were the importance of corroboration from the victim's statement to perpetrator's confession, the prosecution of child sexual abuse, and the analysis of physical evidence. Other topics considered in the conference were critical incident response group resources, the investigation of multi-victim/multi-offender cases, stress management and burnout prevention, and what police managers should know about Internet crimes against children.
