This article examines the Minneapolis multiagency team approach to fighting street crime.
Abstract
The Minneapolis, MN, Gang Task Force consists of 16 handpicked officers and 3 sergeants. The Task Force works in close partnership with the weapons unit to ensure immediate processing, at the street level, of gun violations and offenders. Its close working relationship with the County District Attorney's Prosecution Unit is key to the Task Force's excellent record in bringing down the numbers of violent crimes. One of the Task Force's most important partnerships is that with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). ATF provides street-level investigative support, assisting in weapons identification and tracking and other areas within their jurisdiction and expertise. Other agencies in the effort include the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department, the St. Paul Police Department's Gang Unit, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the District Attorney's Prosecutor's Office. In addition to its work in Minneapolis, the Gang Task Force is a valuable resource and information clearing-house for other law enforcement organizations. Figures
