Across the country, numerous programs have been designed to improve problems in school safety. States and local jurisdictions determining the program that best matches their needs can be difficult and time consuming. At the request of the New York City's Board of Education, the Vera Institute of Justice produced this manual to assist State and local jurisdictions in the process of selecting, developing, and implementing a school safety program. Each of the over 50 programs listed in the manual have been evaluated in schools. These programs were identified as some of the most effective in gaining positive outcomes for youth in regards to school safety. The programs were identified within 13 different categories: academic enrichment, adolescent health, alternative education, anger/behavior management programs, bullying, drug and alcohol prevention, family issues, gangs, racial and other bias-related conflict, school police, sexual harassment/sexual violence, truancy/dropout prevention, and violence prevention. In addition, each program within the manual is divided into six sections: (1) program description; (2) set-up procedure; (3) personnel resources; (4) other resources; (5) cost; and (6) contact information. The sections will assist schools to better understand the components involved in the implementation of each program.
