This article presents the recommendations developed at the IACP's (International Association of Chiefs of Police) 2001 national policy summit, which focused on violent crime and safety issues in Indian Country.
Abstract
Summit participants developed policy recommendations in the following areas: jurisdictional issues; resources for Indian Country law enforcement, justice, and program agencies; training and education for Indian Country law enforcement, justice, and program agencies; coordination and cooperation among Indian Country law enforcement, justice, and program agencies; response to victims of crime in Indian Country; and prevention strategies to reduce crime in Indian Country. The 52 core recommendations are presented in this article. Plans for implementing these recommendations have already begun. The IACP intends to continue working with its summit partners, the IACP Indian Country Law Enforcement Section, the Federal Office of Tribal Justice, the Federal Office of Justice Programs, and other agencies within the U.S. Department of Justice to implement the recommendations. The recommendations focus generally on cooperation among Federal, State, local, and tribal organizations in developing and implementing policies and programs for improved public safety and justice in Indian Country. The summit participants recommend more funding, direct funding, and more efficient coordination of funding for Indian Country justice and public safety services.
