This paper examines the welfare services and correctional education programs available to prison inmates in Edo State, Nigeria.
Abstract
The paper suggests that welfare services and correctional education activities are poorly provided because of inadequate human and material resources. This state of affairs is costly to society since many inmates are not reformed and not well prepared for crime-free life on the outside. The article proposes: (1) the use of part-time instructors to augment the number of personnel available for correctional education; (2) inmates’ parents and guardians, affluent members of society, and non-governmental organizations to assist prison authorities; (3) diversification of vocational skills training programs; (4) networking; and (5) establishment of viable library services. The paper also endorses guidance and counseling services and religious education. The paper concludes that the prison system in Edo State is not adequately fulfilling its stated objectives. It is imperative that government, prison administration, and non-governmental organizations explore ways and means of improving the inmates’ welfare and offer them quality correctional education.
