This article discusses the use and effects of common “club drugs” found at rave parties and the control and sale of these drugs by business-minded gang members.
Abstract
“Club drugs” or “recreational drugs” are commonly found at rave parties and are found to be controlled by business-minded gang leaders and members. Evidence supports the fact that older, mobile gang members are involved in the sale of these “club drugs.” This article describes six “club drugs,” their use, and effects. Ecstasy is a drug smuggled into the United States from Europe. Ecstasy’s street names are exhaustive. The drug is usually taken in a pill form. Under the influence of the drug, lights and sound take on altered qualities, causing a state of euphoria. GHB is normally sold and used as a clear liquid. It is often placed in the drink of an unsuspecting victim. Mixed with alcohol the effects are enhanced and can be fatal. A common side effect of GHB is amnesia. Ketamine is used as a veterinary anesthesia. It can be injected, applied to a smokeable material and smoked, or consumed in drinks. Ketamine produces physical effects similar to PCP and visual effects of LSD. LSD is most commonly sold and used in the form of “blotter paper.” However, today the liquid form is becoming more popular. Compared to other drugs it is cheap to buy. Methamphetamine is relatively inexpensive and ideal to sell at raves or clubs. It causes stimulant effects, but its effects vary depending on the method of ingestion. It can cause convulsions, high temperatures, uncontrolled movements, insomnia, and death. Rohypnol used as a prescription sleep disorder medication has never been manufactured in the United States It is commonly known as the date-rape drug. Rohypnol’s most known effect is temporary memory loss.
