There were 266,598 total crime incidents reported to law enforcement agencies in Maryland in 2001, a 4-percent increase compared to 2000. Violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) increased 2 percent; and the property crimes of breaking or entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft increased 4 percent. The total number of arrests for 2001 were 308,094, a 3-percent decrease compared to total arrests for 2000. Of the total number of arrests, 259,000 were adults, a decrease of 4 percent; and 49,094 were juveniles, an increase of less than 1 percent. Out of the total number of arrests, 52,711 were arrested for drug-abuse violations, a 27-percent increase. A total of 23,015 persons were arrested for driving while intoxicated, a 7-percent decrease. For UCR purposes, a crime is cleared when police have identified the offender, have evidence to charge him/her, and take him/her into custody. Maryland law enforcement agencies cleared 22 percent of all Index offenses reported to them in 2001, compared to 23 percent in 2000. Three law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2001, and 3,947 officers were assaulted, a 6-percent decrease. The number of officers assaulted represents 27 percent of the total number of full-time law enforcement officers employed in the State. In 2001 there were 14,652 full-time law enforcement officers employed, a 2-percent increase. There were 2.7 full-time officers employed per 1,000 population. Extensive tables and figures
