The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is part of the Executive Office of the President and was established in 1988 by the Anti-Drug Abuse Act. ONDCP establishes policies, priorities, and objectives for the Nation’s drug control program to reduce illicit drug use, manufacturing and trafficking, drug-related crime and violence, and drug-related health consequences. In addition, ONDCP produces the National Drug Control Strategy directed at the Nation’s anti-drug efforts. This article presents an interview conducted by Law Enforcement Technology with Scott Burns, ONDCP’s Deputy Director of State and Local Affairs, including law enforcement. Seven questions were posed to the deputy director and included: (1) what is the mission of the ONDCP; (2) how does the ONDCP work with Federal, State, and local law enforcement; (3) what is the National Drug Control Strategy; (4) what is the newly released strategy; (5) what impact can local law enforcement have on the drug problem in the United States; (6) explain the ads seen on TV, what is their goal, and are they working; and (7) what do you have to say to law enforcement, especially the frontline officers?
