This report presents the findings from the 2002 Peruvian Coca Survey established by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and implemented to collect information on and monitor the illicit cultivation of coca.
Abstract
Under the global Illicit Crop Monitoring Program (ICMP), developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, systems were established to monitor the illicit cultivation of opium poppy and coca bush. A coca monitoring system was developed in Peru in 1998. The monitoring system produced a detailed mapping of all the coca cultivation areas in 2000. Since than, satellite images have been used to update the estimates. This report presents findings from the 2002 Peruvian Coca Survey monitoring coca cultivation. In Peru, coca cultivation is concentrated in six main areas (Apurimac, the upper Huallaga, La Convention-Lares, Sandia, Aguaytia, and Central Selva). Findings were reported in three areas: coca cultivation, coca production, and coca price. Findings include: (1) the total area under coca cultivation in Peru was estimated at about 46,700 ha in 2002, an increase of 1 percent compared to 2001; (2) the total production of dry coca leaf for 2002 was estimated at 52,500 metric tons with an average yield of about 1,100 kg of dry leaf harvested per hectare; (3) the average price for dry coca leaf on the illicit market reached 2.5 million dollars/kg in 2002; and (4) during this reporting period, the government reported the eradication of 7,200 ha of coca fields.
