This document presents an overview of 2001 State legislative changes that occurred in the area of domestic violence.
Abstract
Summaries of legislative changes for each of 48 States follows a general introduction and overview of the recent legislative changes pertaining to domestic violence. Two charts are offered that provide a glimpse of State legislation and legislative trends. The overview of all State legislative changes notes that 12 States have increased sanctions for repeat domestic violence offenders and violators of protection orders. Nineteen States have newly enacted parts of the full faith and credit legislation of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) I and II. Fourteen States have expanded definitions of domestic violence to incorporate new types of victims, including those victimized by cyberstalking and those victimized in dating relationships. More than 20 States have enacted legislation designed to prevent and treat domestic violence. Other trends include legislation addressing domestic violence and employment issues, including workplace violence and unemployment insurance. Following the State summaries, the report contains information about State domestic violence coalitions, State legislative contacts, and then offers information about the Model Code Project Advisory Committee, the National Council Officers and Trustees, and the Family Violence Department staff members.
