This article presents the preliminary program of the 2003 National Gang Crime Research Center (NGCRC) Sixth International Gang Specialist Training Conference, held in Chicago, IL, on August 13-15, 2003.
Abstract
The conference consisted of topics related to gangs and law enforcement. Presentations consisted of topics such as the psychology of gangs, street gangs and police brutality, using the media and public to assist with locating wanted felons, smuggling/money laundering cases involving gangs and organized crime groups, and mapping techniques for gang investigation and research. The criminal mind and the gangster, skinheads, gang homicides in Chicago, and international terrorism/extremist groups were also discussed. Abstracts are provided for all these topics and outlaw motorcycle gangs, legal liability for gang conduct on property, the Five Percent Nation of Islam, gang awareness for school, group-home, and community-based environments, school tools to prevent gang problems, and violent criminal profiling. Other subjects discussed included hostage negotiations, gangs and rap, Islam integration into organized crime groups, Asian gangs, designer drugs, teenage Satanism, and advanced street gang identification. Street gangs on the Internet, rape drugs and sexual assaults, truancy, and how to talk to kids to prevent gang involvement are other topics discussed.
