Annotation: Intended as a companion to "Understanding the Effects of Domestic Violence: A Handbook for Early Childhood Educators," this manual contains training modules designed to instruct early-childhood educators on the effects of early childhood exposure to domestic violence.
Abstract: The first training module focuses on why the issue of children's exposure to violence between parents or intimate partners in their home environment is important for early-childhood educators to understand; this includes knowledge about the dynamics of domestic violence and how it impacts children exposed to it. The second module addresses the links between what is happening at home in the child's world and the child's reactions and efforts to cope in the child-care setting. Specific strategies to support children are presented, including guidelines for dealing with situations like parent-attended events, crisis situations, and safety education. Safety is presented as the over-riding principle to guide policy and procedures. The first part of the third module focuses on when and how to report to the Children's Aid Society. The other activities are intended to create opportunities for participants to apply what they have learned to case examples. Frequently-asked-questions are included in an exercise to address issues that are often challenging and may be barriers for workers in dealing with domestic violence and the children affected by it. Each module and activity is presented in a uniform format that consists of goals, module outline, set up, time, and advance preparation. Some activities also contain a section called "Note to Trainer," which contains background information and/or tips for facilitating the activity. Each module also contains a section that provides the masters for making the overheads or handouts needed for instruction. 4 resources and 14 references
