Abstract

NIJ's body armor standard is continually evolving, representing NIJ's commitment to monitoring and improving upon the standard. Users of these standards should ensure they are referring to the most recent edition of the standard. The latest versions of the standard document may be obtained online from NIJ's Compliance Testing Office, www.justnet.org. Clarification is provided for 14 sections of the NIJ Standard-0101.4, "Ballistic Resistance of Personal Body Armor." Clarifications are offered by section number and text changes are presented in italic print. Changes occur under the following topics: accessory ballistic panels, backface signature, acceptance criteria, ballistic penetration and backface signature criteria, sampling, armor backing material, velocity measuring equipment, wet conditioning, backing material fixture preparation, workmanship examination, firing sequence for Type I, IIA, and IIIA Armor, P-BFS test for groin and coccyx protectors, ballistic limit retesting of compliant armor, test documentation, and appendix A. Several new subsections have been added. Written technical comments and suggested revisions are welcome; contact information is provided.
