This pamphlet provides background information on the origin, mission, and functions of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center System (NLECTC).
Abstract
The NLECTC, a program of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), was established in 1994 by NIJ's Office of Science and Technology to deliver information and technology assistance to local police departments, the agencies of State and local corrections systems, and other public safety organizations. Through a network of regional centers and specialty offices located across the Nation, the NLECTC system has delivered expertise in a number of technologies by establishing partnerships with various host organizations whose technologies are applicable to law enforcement and corrections. The NLECTC system provides information and assistance for agencies in determining the most appropriate and cost-effective technology to help solve a particular problem; and the staff serves as proxy scientists and engineers in the areas of evidence analysis, systems engineering, and communications and information systems support. NLECTC develops technology guides, best practices, and other information resources. It also helps departments and agencies gain access to surplus property programs that make Federal access and surplus property available to law enforcement and corrections personnel at little or no cost. NLECTC oversees equipment testing, introduces and demonstrates new and emerging technologies, disseminates technology information, identifies new technologies and product concepts, and works through the Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Advisory Council to ensure that the technologies being developed and promoted focus on the real-world needs of public safety agencies. A map shows the locations of the various NLECTC centers.
