This paper presents estimates of the probability that individuals who use marijuana and cocaine receive some of their drug as a gift or through sharing.
Abstract
Data from the 1992 and 1993 National Household Survey of Drug Abuse (NHSDA) show gift receiving and receipt through sharing as important distribution mechanisms in the allocation of several illegal drugs in the United States. Utilizing this data, this paper examined individuals who were the most likely to utilize drug sharing and drug gifts to obtain their drugs. Gift giving and sharing were motivated by a variety of factors including expected reciprocity, altruism, marketing, enhancement of social consumption, and patronage. The likelihood an individual marijuana or cocaine user receives drug gifts or receives drugs through sharing by others depends on age, race, gender, income, and the amount they consume. References
