Abstract
This annual report presents a comprehensive summary of the major index offenses reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program by the State of Alabama’s law enforcement agencies for calendar year 2003. The UCR data deal with criminal activity in a specific geographical area. The report provides a breakdown for the State and localities participating in the UCR program and concentrates on the Index Crime of the FBI’s Part I offenses (homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson), as well as offering tabular and narrative formats for comparisons, trends, rates, and percent changes. Highlights of the 2003 summary offense data include: (1) 194,334 crimes were reported in 2003, a 1-percent increase over 2002; (2) the crime rate for 2003 was 4317.8 per 100,000 inhabitants; (3) on a daily average, there were 546 Part I offenses reported; (4) the total property value stolen in 2003 was $251,864,387 with 18 percent recovered; and (5) there were 402 law enforcement officers assaulted in 2003 with 43 percent receiving serious injuries.
