This article explains biometrics, how the technology is being used to improve security, and its possible uses in the future.
Abstract
Biometrics consists of automated methods for recognizing a person based on a distinctive physiological or behavioral characteristic. Apart from fingerprints, the face, hand geometry, handwriting, iris, retina, veins, and voice are all being used to identify people. New biometrics identification methods being researched include gait, body odor, heartbeat, and inner ear bones. Currently, biometrics are being used to identify people at border crossings, airports, hospitals, and defense and civilian facilities to control entry and access to sensitive areas. Other uses are to restrict access to confidential financial transactions and personal data; new developments could help prevent identity theft. The advantages of biometrics over other security measures are the linking of identification to a physical feature that cannot be transferred or faked, convenience for persons passing through security checkpoints, accuracy, provision of an audit trail, social acceptance, and relatively low expense. SAFLINK, the leading provider of biometric and smart card security solutions, has been selected as a key technology provider to BearingPoint, Inc., for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Worker Identification Credential prototype phase contract awarded to BearingPoint last year. This is the third phase in a comprehensive initiative for improving security at seaports, airports, rail, pipeline, trucking, and mass transit facilities by creating a nationwide credential to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to secure areas.
