Law enforcement agencies across the country have been acutely aware of the need for more timely access to information and easier routes for information sharing. OJP, in cooperation with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), developed GJXDM to meet the increasing information sharing needs of local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies. GJXDM allows data to be shared and understood among many different types of systems through the use of a common language. The software is described as economical because it does not require the replacement of current equipment or systems and it reduces the resources needed for agencies to create their own data sharing systems. GJXDM has been proven reliable through extensive police use and it is flexible enough to meet a diverse array of needs and requirements, even for organizations outside of the justice community. Examples of GJXDM implementation are offered and the future of GJXDM is considered as plans are made for a new phase of accelerated growth for this software.
