While the sex industry is decades old and widespread, prostitution remains an under-researched segment of the hidden economy. The current study on prostitution in Kentucky relied on 3 main data sources to describe the sex industry in the State: all daily and weekly newspaper stories regarding prostitution and the sex industry in Kentucky that were published between January 1, 2000 to November 1, 2004; men’s writings on the Internet related to prostitution and the sex industry in Kentucky; and any databases or advertising sites on the Internet for the sex industry in Kentucky (N=20). The analysis is descriptive and outlines the problem of prostitution in this State by prostitution form: street-level prostitution, massage parlors, escort services, gentlemen’s clubs, and sex trafficking. Massage parlor prostitution is the most common form of prostitution while street-level prostitution accounts for between 10 and 20 percent of the prostitution in Kentucky. In addition to describing the prevalence and incidence of the various types of prostitution in Kentucky, the article describes various aspects of the prostitution types, such as how transactions occur and the typical costs involved. Overall, the research indicated that the prostitution industry in Kentucky is bustling, with a minimum of 166 businesses involved in the daily trafficking of sex in the State.
