GHB or gamma-hydroxybutyrate was originally developed in the 1950s in France for use with sleep disorders and as an anesthetic. It was introduced in the United States in 2002 as treatment for narcolepsy. It expounded its use in the United States predominantly in the “sports” world as a supplement for bodybuilding. However, today GHB is seen as highly addictive providing a high that is seen as better than alcohol (without the hangover). It is a central nervous system depressant which is odorless, tasteless, and highly potent. It is also the number one sexual predator drug of choice. Ingredients used to make GHB include: GBL, sodium, and water. In 2001, GHB became a schedule 1 controlled substance. This videotape developed by the Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training Program at St. Petersburg College is intended to educate and train law enforcement officers, raising their level of awareness on the dangers of GHB. In addition to a comprehensive description of use and abuse of GHB, the videotape attempts to educate law enforcement officers on GHB. Experts from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Los Angeles Police Department (retired) present this information on GHB because the majority of police officers do not understand GHB since most have never seen it before.
