One day a couple, attempting to purchase a new home, finds out from the mortgage lender that their loan cannot be approved due to several outstanding and unpaid credit card bills. These credit cards do not belong to them; they have become victims of a mail fraud scam. Their personal information was taken or stolen from mail left in their mailbox for pickup by the postal service. This case study of identity theft was created by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in a video format to inform people of the many dangers in becoming a victim of a mail fraud scam. It provides four simple steps that individuals can take to prevent identity theft that include: (1) depositing all mail in blue mail collection boxes; (2) shredding or burning all preapproved credit card applications and financial statements; (3) getting a copy of the credit report at least once a year, especially before large purchases; and (4) limiting the amount of personal information given out over the phone and Internet and only providing personal information to reputable companies and organizations.
