This study sought to gain more information on the phallometric response of different categories of sexual offenders against girls.
Abstract
Findings reinforce the main patterns of results suggested by previous studies which include: (1) on average, men who offended against their own biological daughters showed the same degree of sexual attraction to children as did men who offended against their stepdaughters; (2) men who offended against girls who were biologically related, but not as daughters showed the same degree of attraction to children as did men who offended girls who were completely unrelated to them; (3) men who offended against girls who were not their daughters showed more attraction to children than did men who offended against their daughters or stepdaughters; and (4) men who offended against girls in the daughter/stepdaughter category or in the otherwise-related/unrelated category showed more attraction to children than did men who offended against adult women or against no one at all. The results demonstrate that the use of continuous versus dichotomized measures of phallometric response may sometimes lead to discrepant conclusions. Prior studies, especially those concerning sexual offenders against biological daughters, stepdaughters, and unrelated girls have yielded some suggestions about grouping of sexual offenders against children according to their probability of genuine pedophilia, but required confirmation. This study compared the mean levels of sexual response to children produced by four groups of men with sexual offenses against prepubescent girls and two comparison groups with other offenses or no offenses. The study groups (n = 291) consisted of patients referred for clinical assessment of their sexual behavior or interests. Figures, tables, and references
