Weed and Seed successes are presented in the areas of law enforcement, community policing, prevention, neighborhood restoration, reentry, and American Indian/Alaska Native. Highlights of these stories from various programs working to prevent crime and provide safer communities within the Weed and Seed strategy include: (1) Operation J.U.S.T.I.C.E. (Joint Urban Strike Team Increasing Community Efforts) in Texas, an initiative assisting law enforcement and neighborhood residents in the investigation and prevention of violent crimes and drug offenses in public housing; (2) Utica, NY’s anti-gang initiative through community unification; (3) the adoption of the Youth Crime Watch (YCW) model (core group of youth leaders assisting in major issues and problems facing their school or community) in North Carolina, Ohio, and Alabama; (4) the Individual Development Account (IDA) Homeownership Program in Racine, WI, to nurture home ownership in the community and to reap the benefits of individual asset building; (5) the Central City Reentry program in Tennessee offering a strong support system and employment/jobs for ex-offenders; and (6) the funding of tribal Anti-Meth Coalitions by the State of Arizona which are using the Strategic Prevention Framework. This report, from the Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO), presents and offers the stories of Weed and Seed strategies implemented across the United States that have been effective in crime prevention and community safety.
