A review of grants and grant amounts awarded for Fiscal Year 2006 for the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP) include: (1) law enforcement--228 grants in areas such as bulletproof vest partnership, Weed and Seed, and pandemic influenza planning; (2) courts--35 grants in areas such as tribal courts assistance and capital litigation; (3) corrections--31 grants in areas such as prisoner reentry initiative; (4) gangs--350 grants in the areas of youth gang reduction and gang resistance education and training; (5) juvenile justice--346 grants in areas such as juvenile accountability block grant, missing and exploited children, and tribal youth; (6) victims of crime--182 grants in areas such as crime victim assistance, services for trafficking victims, support for victims of terrorism and mass violence, and victim assistance in the Federal system; (7) substance abuse and crime--100 grants in areas such as Indian Alcohol and Crime Demonstration Program and Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program; (8) technology to fight crime--393 grants in areas such as criminal records improvement and the President's DNA Initiative; and (9) research, statistics and evaluation--151 grants in the areas of criminal justice statistical programs and research, development, and evaluation programs. OJP records an impressive estimated 75,000 grants totaling close to $38.5 billion in assistance to State and local law enforcement and community organizations over 20 years. OJP consists of seven bureaus: Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Bureau of Justice Statistic (BJS), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO), and Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehension, Registering, and Tracking Office (SMART).
