This article emphasizes the need for police officers to receive training in driving while intoxicated (DWI) detection and sobriety testing in order to be effective in impaired driving enforcement.
Abstract
In order for police officers to be effective in impaired driving enforcement they must first receive the basic training, and then receive periodic updates and refreshers. It is important to keep officers educated and trained in impaired driving enforcement. The National Highway and Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) developed a 24-hour course of study, the DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Test Course; a basic training course for police officers covering case law and administrative procedures, as well as proper administration and interpretation of the test battery. However, after taking this class most officers never receive additional impaired drive training. Without providing periodic re-training officers cannot keep up on new standards surrounding the issues. Refresher classes are meant to supplement the training received in the classroom and on the street. Officers who have received advanced training are invaluable resources to their agencies and communities.
