Highlights of report findings include: (1) in 2007, 104 out of 111 sheriff's departments and police departments reported 12 months of crime data in 2007; (2) 30,273 index crimes were reported in Montana for 2007; (3) 37,690 persons were arrested in 2007 by the Montana Incident-Based Reporting system (MTIBR) reporting agencies; (4) 72 percent of the arrestees were male and 28 percent were female; (5) the second most commonly reported Group B offense was Driving Under the Influence (DUI) in both 2006 (23 percent) and 2007 (23 percent); (6) in 2007, Montana's index crime rate rose about 2.4 percent from 2006; the lowest crime rate over the last 30-year period; in 2007, the crime rate is the second lowest over the same time period; (7) Cascade County and Silver Bow County experienced the highest crime rates in the State during 2007; (8) the volume of reported violent crimes in 2007 was slightly up from 2006; over the 2-year period the violent crime rate increased 1.4 percent; (9)18 homicides were reported in 2007, down from 26 in 2006, a 23 percent decrease; (10) reported property offenses was slightly up in 2007 from 2006; the property crime rate is up about 2.5 percent from the 2006 rate; (11) in 2007, White juveniles committed almost 80 percent of the property crime and 70 percent of the violent crime; White non-Hispanic juveniles make up about 84 percent of the total juvenile population; and (12) in 2007, women were almost 5 times more likely to report being primary victims of a crime in Montana. This report on the status of crime in the State of Montana for 2006-2007 is based primarily on data from the MTIBR. Tables, figures, charts, and appendixes A-D
