Highlights of the work of the Indian Alcohol & Substance Abuse Program (IASAP) in 2008 include the following: in fiscal year 2008, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) awarded 11 grants to tribes totaling $3.2 million; the BJA funds were used to develop and enhance multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary working groups and tasks forces, reduce drug- and alcohol-related crime and injuries, and apprehend and prosecute smugglers and dealers of methamphetamine; and over 4,000 personnel were able to receive training or onsite technical assistance through funding from IASAP, while over 1,200 non-grantee professionals received scholarships to attend training.
