The new "One on One With..." feature is authored by Joshua A. Ederheimer, Assistant Chief of Police of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. He offers nine suggestions for how researchers and funding organizations can better partner with law enforcement. This is followed by an outline of three ways to apply for funding under the COPS Secure Our Schools 2008 grant program and the Tribal Resources Grant Program 2008. An article then describes a novel approach for advancing community policing through Internal Affairs units, which are responsible for ensuring that police ethics are enforced in an agency. The article describes a national Internal Affairs conference under COPS sponsorship in which Internal Affairs executives, leaders of civilian oversight boards, academics, and other experts sought to find common best practices for implementation in Internal Affairs units nationally, so as to promote public trust in the police and advance community policing. An article on how Planning and Research Units can do more to promote innovation and advance community policing offers suggestions on support for performance measurement and strategic planning; the promotion of innovation and best practices; conducting workload, call-load, and patrol area analyses, as well as population impact assessment; and coordinating community surveying. The OVC products pertain to first response to victims of crime and responding to victims of human trafficking.
