This CD-ROM produced by the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) provides access to problem-oriented policing resources that address issues in school safety under the topics of gangs, law enforcement in schools, school safety technology, school violence and violence prevention, and youth disorder and delinquency.
Abstract
The variety of resources for dealing with gangs in the school context include a COPS Gangs Toolkit, which contains resources for law enforcement officials, educators, and parents in addressing specific types of crime committed by gangs. Another resource identifies and discusses factors that contribute to a gang presence in schools, as well as the impact on victimization of the presence of gangs in schools. Among the many resources available on the topic of law enforcement in schools is a guide for developing, maintaining, and succeeding with a school resource officer (SRO) program. Case studies of 19 SRO programs include a national assessment of what program models have been implemented, how they have been implemented, and lessons learned. Resources on school safety technology are also available though COPS. These resources include a document on basic issues in school security technologies, such as what, if any, security technologies should be considered when developing safe school strategies. Possible technologies for addressing violence, theft, and vandalism are discussed. Technologies for controlling access to school facilities are also addressed. Resources for addressing school violence include materials that deal with bias and prejudice among students, training in conflict resolution, how to address bomb threats, and reducing crime through student problem-solving. Among the resources that target youth disorder and delinquency are materials that focus on bullying and harassment, the co-occurrence of delinquency and other problem behaviors, and disorderly youth in public places. Resources on factors related to school safety focus on such topics as Internet child pornography and building communities that support youth.
