Abstract
Postal Inspectors are Federal law enforcement officers who carry firearms, make arrests, execute Federal search warrants, and serve subpoenas. They work closely with U.S. attorneys, other law enforcement agencies, and local prosecutors to investigate postal cases and prepare them for court. Postal Inspectors are stationed throughout the United States, enforcing roughly 200 Federal laws covering investigations of crimes that adversely affect or entail fraudulent use of the U.S. Mail and Postal System. They maintain a security force for critical postal facilities throughout the country, and their national information technology infrastructure supports users at nearly 200 sites nationwide. A full Office of Counsel provides legal services, while a communications group extends internal and external reports and news releases, informing the public about mail-related crime. This is the 2007 Annual Report of Investigations of the United States Postal Inspection Service which outlines significant achievements in safeguarding billions of pieces of mail each year. In FY 2007, Postal Inspectors arrested more than 9,000 suspects for crimes involving the mail or against the U.S. Postal Service. Statistics presented are from the following areas of jurisdiction: security; mail fraud and revenue protection; global security and investigations; mail theft and violent crime; dangerous mail; national preparedness; child exploitation via the mail; consumer education, fraud prevention, and congressional liaison; forensic laboratory services; technical services; office of counsel; investigative requirements and solutions; and criminal statistics for FY 2007.
