This article outlines the restructuring of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) to better serve the public safety community.
Abstract
The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) was established in 1994 under the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to identify the technology needs of the public safety community and administer compliance testing the effectiveness of essential criminal justice equipment such as body armor. This article provides an overview of the revised NLECTC, announced in April 2010. Under the revised structure, the system includes a national center, several Centers of Excellence (CoEs), and three outreach centers serving different demographic areas. The outreach centers serve as the point of entry to the resources of the NLECTC system and the CoEs support of NIJ's research, development, testing and evaluation efforts in communications techniques, electronic crime technology, forensic science, information and sensor systems, and weapons and protective systems.
