The United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) began in March 2007 to provide global access to expertise, knowledge, and innovative partnerships with a goal towards countering the increasing problem of human trafficking. The aim of UN.GIFT is to mobilize nations in the fight against human trafficking by: 1) reducing the demand for human exploitation and the vulnerability of potential victims; 2) ensuring adequate support and protection to victims of trafficking; and 3) supporting the prosecution of criminals involved in human trafficking while at the same time respecting the fundamental human rights of all persons. This report examines the following: 1) global and collective advocacy efforts to raise awareness of human trafficking; 2) evidence-based knowledge on human trafficking to contribute to global, regional, and national policy development; 3) greater coordination and cooperation among international organizations and innovative public-private partnerships; 4) system-wide, institutional and individual capacity-building of stakeholders through the delivery of technical assistance; 5) an independent evaluation of UN.GIFT; and 6) conclusions regarding the work of UN.GIFT.
