This bulletin's featured article maintains that by recognizing certain clues, investigators can identify deception; and a second featured article argues that police agencies must examine their policies regarding uniform and equipment issues.
Abstract
"Evaluating Truthfulness and Detecting Deception" explains that training and practice can help individuals and groups leverage facial expressions of emotion, other nonverbal behaviors, and statement analysis to better evaluate truthfulness, detect deception, and assess credibility. "Donning and Doffing" Police Uniforms and Protective Gear Under the Fair Labor Standards Act examines the debate on whether the time spent "donning and doffing" the police uniform and other protective gear should be calculated as hours worked during any given pay period. Four other articles have themes related to the magazine's "Departments" that pertain to "Perspective," "Leadership Spotlight," "Research Forum," and "Bulletin Report." "Determining the Best Fit for University Policing" (Perspective) focuses on the evaluation of officers transitioning from traditional law enforcement models to university policing so as to ensure that they can adjust to the distinctive model of university policing. "Self-Centered Leadership" (Leadership Spotlight) outlines the characteristics of a self-centered leader and his/her adverse impact on organizational dynamics and operation. "Coping with the Career" (Research Forum) reports on a review of acquired patterns of veteran law enforcement officers, with attention to how to cope constructively with continued exposure to crime, danger, suffering, and violence. "Girls' Delinquency" (Bulletin Report) reports on the findings and funded programs that have stemmed from the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's Girls Study Group created in 2004.
