This report summarizes some of the findings from the 2008 Arizona Youth Survey (AYS), which assessed school safety, substance use, antisocial behavior, and the risk and protective factors that predict such problem behaviors among 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students.
Abstract
The five types of charts presented in this report address substance use, antisocial behavior and youth gambling, risk factors, protective factors, and where youth obtained alcohol. When available, data from the 2004 and 2006 surveys are included in the charts. The substance abuse charts contain information about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Antisocial behavior and gambling charts show the percentage of students who reported any involvement in the past year with eight antisocial behaviors: suspended from school, drunk or high at school, sold illegal drugs, stolen a vehicle, been arrested, attacked someone to harm them, carried a handgun, and taken a handgun to school. The chart also displays any incidents in the past 30 days of drinking and driving or riding in a car with a drinking driver. The risk and protective factor charts show the percentage of students at high risk and with high protection for each of the risk and protective factor scales. Charts on where youth obtained alcohol report data on the ways that students obtained alcohol in the past 30 days. The AYS results can assist school and communities comply with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). This report provides guidance on how survey data can be used to improve school and community conditions so as to prevent identified problem behaviors among youth. A list of contacts for prevention is provided.
