Abstract

The "DHS Saver System" describes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's System Assessment and Validation for Emergency Responders (SAVER) Program, which provides online assistance to emergency responder agencies that are involved in deciding what equipment to buy. "Smartphones and Law Enforcement" reviews how handheld devices that combine voice services with advanced computing ability are being used by law enforcement agencies. "Popular Video Educates on School Safety" profiles a documentary video produced by the U.S. Justice Department's National Institute of Justice. The video discusses technology solutions - including less-lethal technologies, metal detectors, and enhanced use of surveillance cameras - that could be used to improve schools' ability to respond to security emergencies. "Planning Helps Agencies Embrace Technology" discusses the importance and characteristics of careful planning and analysis when law enforcement agencies are evaluating, choosing, implementing, and managing a new technology. "Course Offers Intense Training for Latent Print Examiners" describes a free 9-month training program sponsored by the National Institute of Justice, in which selected students (serving as latent fingerprint examiners) are trained in the foundation of the science and receive hands-on experience in analyzing latent prints and providing related testimony in court. "Early Intervention System Secures Data Boosts Efficiency" describes a federally sponsored Early Intervention System (EIS) that stores data securely, eliminates duplicative efforts, reduces paperwork, and streamlines the review process. The issue concludes with a summary update of technology news.
