Date Published

Intended as a companion piece to the other reports produced from the 1991 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), this report presents population estimates of drug-use prevalence for the civilian non-institutionalized population of the United States ages 12 and over.
Abstract
This revised Population Estimates report replaces the earlier version printed in late 1991. After that report was printed, editing procedures for the drug-use variables were revised to account for the occurrence of a specific measurement error associated with the questionnaire. Population estimates are presented separately for the total population and for Whites, Hispanics, and Blacks. The data are also presented separately for each of the four U.S. Census Bureau regions. For each drug, eight tables are arranged to facilitate group comparisons. The data for the total population are presented by sex for each of the four age groups: 12-17, 18-25, 26-34, and 35 and over. Data in the remaining seven tables for each racial or regional category are presented first by age, then by sex, and finally for the total population in that racial or regional category. Categories of use are "ever used," "used in the past year," and "used in the past month." The population estimate tables have been organized into two sections, each with a slightly different purpose. One section presents prevalence estimates for specific drugs and drug classes. This section is useful when estimates are needed for the percentage or number of persons illicitly using drugs, or a particular drug. The second section presents data on the frequency of drug use among past year users. This section is useful for those who want some indication of the regularity of drug use. 22 tables
