Abstract
This slide presentation was given at the June 2012 Juvenile PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Coordinator's Conference sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. The presentation contains information for juvenile facility administrators on establishing PREA standards for their facility. Information is presented on the history of the PREA and how the standards were developed for four types of facilities: prison/jails, lockups, juvenile facilities, and community confinement. The remainder of the slides deal with the PREA standards established for juvenile facilities and presents the actual language of the law for specific areas. The different areas covered by the standards include prevention planning, responsive planning, training and education, screening for risk of sexual victimization and abusiveness, reporting by residents and facility administrators, third-party reporting, the official response following a resident report, investigations, discipline, medical and mental care for residents, data collection and review, auditing and corrective action, and State compliance.
