The recommendations presented in this brief report were developed following a summit hosted by the U.S. Department of Education to address correctional and reentry education for youth and adults. Key stakeholders from across the country were convened in eight listening sessions to discuss the challenges of providing quality correctional and reentry education and career/technical training to young people. A total of 20 recommendations are presented in 4 key areas: recommendations for immediate action, recommendations to improve correctional education for young people, recommendations to facilitate and increase access to education for young people upon reentry, and recommendations to increase oversight and accountability of correctional and reentry education for young people. The recommendations for immediate action include the following: the U.S. Department of Education should provide the leadership and support to ensure that young people both in confinement and upon reentry have access to, and training in, technology; the U.S. Department of Education should hold States accountable for correctional and reentry education; and as a part of its Race to the Top program, the U.S. Department of Education should support innovative practices that ensure access to quality education for youth in correctional settings and upon reentry into the community.
