This study analyzes the training and job assignments of disabled persons for work in French prisons.
Abstract
The hiring and training of disabled persons for prison jobs as required by recruitment regulations has created job stress and management problems for prisons. An examination of prison administrations' efforts to accommodate handicapped employees in the prison environment has involved one of two strategies. One strategy is to place them in lower level jobs that compromise opportunities for advancement and pay increases. Another strategy is to assimilate them into employee ranks and deal with their limitations while tailoring their proficiencies to various tasks. The article concludes that administrators in French prisons have yet to develop an innovative approach to training and job assignments that will enable handicapped workers to experience job satisfaction while performing meaningful and effective services for the prison.
