Abstract: Major findings from this report on crime in Maryland for the year 2010 include the following: crime in Maryland decreased 5 percent in 2010, from 215,920 total crime incidents in 2009 to 204,917 total crime incidents in 2010; the largest decreases in violent crime rates occurred for arson (9.9 percent), motor vehicle theft (8.1 percent), and robbery (7.9 percent), while rape saw an increase of 6.2 percent; arrests in Maryland decreased 5 percent to 270,798 in 2010, down from 285,788 in 2009; 85 percent of arrests were adults, a decrease of 5 percent from 2009; almost 21 percent of arrests were for drug offenses and almost 10 percent of arrests were for driving while intoxicated; and 4 Maryland law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2010 and 3,694 were assaulted. This annual report was compiled by the Maryland State Police using data obtained from the State’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. The report provides detailed statistics on crime incidents for crime index offenses, clearance rates, arrests, law enforcement officers killed and assaulted, and law enforcement employee data. Maryland’s UCR program also collects data on domestic violence, hate bias, and carjacking incidents and arrests. Limitations of the State’s UCR program are discussed. Tables and figures
