The program is presented for the 2012 Office for Victims of Crime Mass Violence & Emergency National Training Conference held on January 31-February 2, 2012, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Abstract
The conference theme was "Improving Readiness to Assist Victims." The conference provided 50 workshops on various topics related to assisting victims of mass violence. The conference was attended by representatives of organizations and disciplines that included police, fire and rescue, investigators, medical providers, prosecutors, victim service professionals, policymakers, faith communities, and other allied professionals. Workshop topics are listed along with brief summaries of their content. Among the topics discussed are addressing victim needs in disaster situations; available resources at the Federal, State, and local levels; building victim liaison teams; constructing a family resource/assistance center; dealing with secondary crime arising from mass casualty events; cultural and victim sensitivity; effective leadership in times of crisis; and effective media relations. The conference agenda and speaker biographies are included.
