This is the User's Guide for the Prisoners component of the Corrections Statistical Analysis Tool (CSAT), which is accessible on the home page of the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics' (BJS') home page (accessible through this NCJRS entry) for examining national and jurisdictional prisoner data for both Federal and State correctional authorities from 1978 to the most recent year of available data.
Abstract
The CSAT provides access to prisoner data for each of the 50 States, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), and the District of Columbia (until 2001, when sentenced felons from the District of Columbia became the responsibility of the BOP). The CSAT's "quick" tables show trends in prisoner counts and rates, and links are provided to key tables in the most recent BJS publication on the U.S. prisoner population. The CSAT's "custom" tables enable users to analyze year-end prisoner populations and types of admissions and releases.. Year-end population measures include the number of inmates in custody or under legal jurisdiction, imprisonment rates, the number of prisoners held in the custody of private facilities and local jails, and non-citizens and juveniles in prison. Each of these measures can be examined by sex and jurisdiction. This is the first component of the new CSAT. BJS will release another component with data on probation and parole, followed by one with data on local jails. In addition to descriptions of the features of the prisoners component of the CSAT, this User's Guide explains how to access CSAT for prisoner data. Separate sections of the guide address the features of "quick" tables and "custom tables. A section on "supporting documents" contains documents related to the National Prisoner Statistics (NPS) program. Information is also provided on the recommended citation when publishing data from the CSAT prisoner data analysis tool. 14 figures and contact information for additional questions
