A LITERATURE REVIEW AND ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY DEALING WITH ROBBERY, THE ROBBER, AND TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE METHODS OF ROBBERY PREVENTION.
Abstract
THIS REPORT WAS PREPARED AS PART OF A LEAA-FUNDED STUDY ON ROBBERY PREVENTION AND DETERRENCE CONDUCTED BY THE WESTERN BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES INSTITUTE. THE BASIC CONCEPT OF THAT PROJECT DEPARTS FROM CONVENTIONAL APPROACHES TO PREVENTION BY EMPHASIZING DISSUASION AT THE ROBBERY SITE RATHER THAN DETERRENCE THROUGH FEAR OF APPREHENSION AND NEGATIVE SANCTIONS. THIS LITERATURE REVIEW COVERS SUCH ASPECTS OF THE PROBLEM AS DEFINITIONS OF ROBBERY, REASONS FOR ROBBERY INCREASES, THE MOTIVES OF ROBBERS, THE ROBBERY VICTIM, CONVENTIONAL DETERRENCE, AND CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH URBAN PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. THE SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF CONVENIENCE STORES WITH RESPECT TO ROBBERIES AND THE USE OF EX-OFFENDERS AS CONSULTANTS AND RESEARCHERS IN ROBBERY PREVENTION ARE ALSO EXAMINED. THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY LISTS 116 SELECTIONS ON ROBBERY, VIOLENCE, CRIME PREVENTION, AND VICTIMIZATION. A LIST OF INFORMATION SOURCES IS ALSO PROVIDED.
