THIS DOCUMENT PRESENTS A COLLECTION OF RESEARCH DESIGNS FOR THE FIRST SET OF TASKS STRUCTURED UNDER THE PROMIS RESEARCH PROJECT, INCLUDING ANALYSES OF PROSECUTOR OPERATIONS, POLICE PERFORMANCE, AND CRIMINAL PATTERNS.
Abstract
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROMIS RESEARCH PROJECT WERE TO CONDUCT EMPIRICAL ANALYSES; TO DEVELOP, TEST, AND EVALUATE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM; AND TO DEVELOP A RESEARCH METHODOLOGY TRANSFER PROGRAM, WHILE FOCUSING ON THE FOLLOWING MAJOR RESEARCH TOPICS: PROSECUTION PERFORMANCE, POLICE OPERATIONS FROM THE COURT'S PERSPECTIVE, PATTERNS OF CRIMINAL AND RELATED COMMUNITY BEHAVIOR, PLEA BARGAINING, SPEEDY TRIAL, AND JUDICIAL DECISION-MAKING. THE RESEARCH METHODS EMPHASIZE THE USES OF STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES AND SYSTEMS ANALYSIS, AND DRAW ON DATA FROM THE PROSECUTOR'S MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM. THE RESEARCH DESIGNS PRESENTED HERE SET FORTH SUCH INFORMATION AS THE OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH, THE MEASURES USED, A MODEL TO TESTED, AND HYPOTHESES TO BE TESTED. OTHER RESEARCH DESIGNS INCLUDED IN THIS DOCUMENT ARE DATA PURIFICATION FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES, AND APPLICATION OF MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES.
