AN OVERVIEW OF THE FACILITIES, RECENT REFORMS, PROGRAMS, AND PROBLEMS OF THE MISSOURI CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE RECENT TREND IN MISSOURI CORRECTIONS TOWARD OPEN COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE PRESS AND THE PUBLIC IS DESCRIBED. THE ADULT CORRECTIONS SYSTEM IS OUTLINED, AND INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON ADULT CORRECTIONS REFORMS, CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, AND INMATE POPULATIONS. SUCH PROBLEMS AS RACIAL DISTURBANCES AND OVERCROWDING ARE ALSO EXAMINED. CORRECTIONAL EFFORTS AND PROGRAMS IN THE AREAS OF INMATE CLASSIFICATION, PRISON INDUSTRIES, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, EX-OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE REVIEWED. JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS ARE ALSO EXAMINED. TRENDS TOWARD COMMUNITY-BASED ALTERNATIVES, REGIONALIZATION, AND IMPROVED TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION EFFORTS ARE NOTED IN MISSOURI JUVENILE CORRECTIONS.
