TEST SERIES DESIGNED AND EXECUTED USING ANESTHETIZED SWINE TO STUDY THE IMPACTS OF INDIVIDUALLY LAUNCHED RUBBER BULLETS, BASEBALLS, AND FLYING BATONS AS DAMAGE MECHANISMS TO SKIN, CRITICAL ORGANS, AND FLESHY AREAS.
Abstract
ANESTHETIZED ANIMALS WERE SUBJECTED TO NOMINAL IMPACT, ENERGY LEVELS RANGING FROM 30 TO 550 FOOT-POUNDS. EACH ANIMAL, EXCEPTING TWO, WAS IMPACTED ONLY ONCE. ANIMALS WERE SACRIFICED AND SUBJECTED TO NECROPSIES PERFORMED BY A VETERINARY PATHOLOGIST WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER EXPOSURE TO IMPACTS. THE PHYSICAL DAMAGE DISCERNED DURING THE NECROPSY PROCEDURE, AS WELL AS THE ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHIC CHANGES NOTED DURING THE MONITORING PERIOD, WERE GRADED ACCORDING TO CRITERIA PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED BY THE MEDICAL EVALUATION PANEL FOR THE EVALUATION OF BLUNT-TRAUMA DAMAGE.
