THE PROBATION OFFICER MAY FIND HIMSELF, AT LEAST TEMPORARILY, THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PROFESSIONAL PERSON DEALING WITH A SCHIZOPHRENIC ADOLESCENT - THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS POINTERS ON HOW TO ACT AND REACT.
Abstract
A CAREFUL ASSESSMENT OF THE INDIVIDUAL IS NECESSARY TO SEE IF THE CHILD CAN BE HELPED AT ALL. TIME IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR AS SCHIZOPHRENIC PEOPLE ARE SLOW TO DEVELOP TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS. IT IS HELPFUL TO TELL THE CLIENT WHEN YOU AGREE WITH HIS PERCEPTIONS AND WHEN YOU DON'T, BECAUSE THIS WILL HELP HIM TO DEFINE REALITY. NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT AND, BY THE SAME TOKEN, AN EMPHASIS ON LOGICAL, VERBAL INTERPRETATIONS CAN BE HARMFUL. IN ESSENCE, THE AUTHOR IS OFFERING A PLAN FOR A HOLDING ACTION UNTIL MORE COMPETENT HELP CAN BE OBTAINED. A CASE HISTORY IS PRESENTED.
