FINAL EVALUATION OF A DALLAS IMPACT PROJECT ESTABLISHED TO CONDUCT RESEARCH INTO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DRUG ABUSE AND PROPERTY CRIMES AND TO DEVELOP TARGET DEFINITIONS FOR ACTION PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE DRUG ABUSE RESEARCH PROJECT GOALS INCLUDED ESTABLISHING A LOCAL DATA BASE TO IDENTIFY DRUG USERS AND ANALYZE LOCAL DRUG ABUSE PATTERNS; DETERMINING THE INFLUENCE OF DRUG ABUSE UPON THE INCIDENCE OF IMPACT OFFENSES; AND EXAMINING MARIJUANA ABUSE, ITS GRADUATION TO ADDICTIVE DRUGS, AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO COMMISSION OF OTHER OFFENSES. DATA WERE DERIVED FROM CORRELATIONS BETWEEN LOCAL DRUG ABUSE DATA AND AVAILABLE CRIME STATISTICS. IT WAS REVEALED THAT APPROXIMATELY ONE-THIRD OF ALL IMPACT OFFENSES IN DALLAS ARE DRUG-RELATED. ALL GOALS WERE MET, INCLUDING ESTABLISHMENT OF AN EXTENSIVE DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM. A RECOMMENDATION IS MADE TO INITIATE AN ACTION-ORIENTED PROGRAM.
