EVALUATION OF A LAW-FOCUSED EDUCATION PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED AT THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF ADULT CORRECTIONS, THE MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH SERVICES (DYS), AND ARIZONA JUVENILE CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
SECTION I CONTAINS THE RESULTS OF INTERVIEWS WITH PAROLE COUNSELORS WITH THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF ADULT CORRECTIONS CONCERNING THE WAYS IN WHICH THEY HAVE USED LAW-FOCUSED MATERIALS. A COMPARISON DRAWN BETWEEN THE CONCERNS OF THE PAROLEE AS EXPRESSED BY THE PAROLE COUNSELOR AND THE CONCERNS OF PAROLEES WHO ATTEND PAROLE SCHOOL PRIOR TO RELEASE REVEAL THAT LAW-FOCUSED MATERIAL IS PUT TO ITS BEST USE AFTER THE PAROLEE HAS RESIDED IN THE COMMUNITY FOR A SHORT TIME. IN SECTION II, TEACHERS WORKING FOR DYS WERE INTERVIEWED TO DETERMINE HOW THEY HAVE IMPLEMENTED LAW-FOCUSED EDUCATION INCLUDING TOPIC AREAS COVERED AND CLASSROOM ATMOSPHERE AND ACTIVITIES. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE DATA COLLECTED SUPPORTS CONTINUATION OF LAW-FOCUSED EDUCATION DUE TO TEACHER ENTHUSIASM AND STUDENT RECEPTIVENESS. IN THE THIRD SECTION, STUDENTS IN THE ARIZONA CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES WERE TESTED AND INTERVIEWED. COMPARISONS BETWEEN THOSE EXPOSED TO LAW-FOCUSED MATERIALS AND THOSE NOT EXPOSED TO THEM REVEAL THAT EXPOSURE TO THE CONCEPT CAUSES CHANGES IN JOB SELECTION ATTITUDES IN ADDITION TO INCREASING KNOWLEDGE. INTERVIEW AND TESTING MATERIALS ARE APPENDED.
